Extra Credit Reading: Hans Christian Andersen, Part A

Image
The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen translated by H.P. Paull The story starts with a prince who says he wants to marry a real princess. He goes around the world and meets so many princesses but he finds it hard to tell if they are the real deal or not. One stormy evening a princess comes knocking on their door. The wind and rain make her look really disheveled so they are skeptical about her being a real princess. The queen decides to test her. She goes and puts a pea under twenty mattresses and the princess was to sleep on those. The next morning they ask her how she slept and she says that she slept awfully because she felt something hard in her bed. That's how they knew that she was a real princess because only a real princess could be that sensitive. So the prince and princess end up getting married and the pea is put in a museum for all to see.  The Princess going to the top. Source: The Squirrel Basket .

Reading Notes: Brothers Grimm (LibriVox), Part B

The Twelve Huntsmen from Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes I thought this story was really interesting and fun to read.  The story starts off with a prince who is with his beloved maiden. One day he is called to his father's deathbed. The king says that you have to promise that you will marry whoever I name. So the prince agrees to it and afterwards he is crowned as the new king. Then after he was done mourning, he had to go marry the princess that the king wanted him to marry.  When the first maiden found out about, she gets scared and asks her dad to find her eleven other girls that look like her. When the girls were found, she made them all dress up as huntsmen including herself and then she went to her lover and asked him if he wanted huntsmen. The prince doesn't realize that it's his first girl but he still agrees to keep them all. The king had a lion that knew all the secrets. He told the king one day...

Reading Notes: Brothers Grimm (LibriVox), Part A

Rapunzel from Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes I love the story of Rapunzel. From what I know of the original fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, they are not as happy or comedic as the Disney versions. So as I was reading, I knew there was going to be some things that I was going to be kind of shocked about. The Disney version of Rapunzel is called Tangled and so I was comparing and contrasting to that whilst reading this story. The biggest difference in the Brothers Grimm version and the Disney version is the Prince/Flynn Rider.  In the Brothers Grimm version, the guy who "saves" Rapunzel is the prince who hears singing often when he's in the forest. He sees the tower but doesn't know how to get up until he sees Gothel call out to Rapunzel to let down her hair. In the Disney version, the guy who "saves" her is Flynn Rider/Eugene, who is a thief. He actually steals Rapunzel's crown th...

Learning Challenge: Schedule for this Week

Image
This is my second time around with a class like this. I took Indian Epics last fall and I didn't follow my schedule in that class either. I was hoping I would learn from my mistakes from that semester but I guess not haha. However, I did learn a little bit and right now, I'm not as far behind in this class as I was in that class.  I definitely have not been following my 6-hour schedule. I have done assignments all at random times but I'm just glad that I have been able to get most of them done during the week. I'm not ahead but I'm just a little behind.  My plan for this week is to do every core assignment and every extra credit assignment, plus maybe one or two from Week 15 and I will be done with this class.  I already wrote it down on my planner, but I'll write it here too. I usually always did the extra credit during the weekend but the last 2-3 I've been adding an extra credit assignment to a daily assignment so I won't have to rush to ...

Growth Mindset: Mottos and Mantras

Image created with Canva .  This is a saying that I think most everyone knows. It's from Finding Nemo. Dory the fish (who is voiced by Ellen Degeneres) says this. The meaning behind it is to "not give up." I feel like this is so simple and catchy but yet also kind of has a deeper meaning to it. I don't always say this but sometimes I catch myself thinking this when I want to give up on studying, writing a paper, etc.

Famous Last Words: Ready for Thanksgiving Break!

Wow, I can't believe this week is already over, and we only have a few more weeks of this semester left! I feel like I have been so swamped these last two weeks that I have really fallen behind in this class. However, after looking through what I have left to do and how many points I still need for an A, I think I'm not that behind. I enjoyed doing this week's readings! I read the English Tales unit and then the Russian Fairy Tales for extra credit reading. I wasn't able to write a story for this week because I just couldn't come up with anything. However, I did come up with an idea while going through my blog posts a while ago so I think I'll definitely be able to write a story for this week. This next week I'm going to be reading Dante's Inferno or one of the units about the Brothers Grimm fairytales. I'm not sure which one I want to read yet because I'm interested in both so I might end up reading of them for the extra credit. My best wr...

Learning Challenge: Sleeping Schedules

The title of this article caught my attention. An Underappreciated Key to College Success: Sleep is something that I feel like so many college students can relate to. I think every college student knows how important sleep is for one's health. However, I know we've all gave up sleep to study or do homework. I know some friends that can easily pull all-nighters now because they got so used to doing it for certain classes. The author mentions in this article that college students who don't adopt healthy sleep habits are more likely to have a harder time trying to deal with the coarse load and are less likely to reach their academic potential. At the end of the article, there are a few tips that can help to assure that you get a good night's sleep. One thing that I have tried doing before is getting up at the same time everyday, including weekends. I feel like this is the hardest thing for me because I am just that person that values her sleep especially on the we...
