Wikipedia Trails: From Scott Weinger to Game of Thrones

Image
Wikipedia Trails: From Scott Weinger to Game of Thrones I started the trail off with the article about Scott Weinger . For all of us who have seen Full House know him as Steve, DJ Tanner's boyfriend. I was curious to know more about him because just a few years ago I found out he was the voice of Aladdin. I wanted to read up on him to see if I can recognize him in other things I have seen. As I was looking through his Wikipedia page, I saw that he has voiced Aladdin in so many different movies and even the TV show Aladdin (which I didn't know existed).  From there I went to the article about Tom Holland . I love Tom Holland! I think he is such an amazing actor and has really brought the character of Spider-Man to life. I knew he had a background in ballet and theater from when he was young so I wanted to see what all he had done before he become Spider-Man. I found out he has another movie coming out this year and three more movies coming out next year. I'm so glad

Growth Mindset: Everybody Makes Mistakes

Image
These are two of my favorite quotes I just saw on the Growth Mindset Padlet. Cheers to Mistakes " This reminds me to not worry about the mistakes I made, currently make and will make in the future, because each mistake is worthy of celebration as it is a stepping stone towards success." I love this quote because I feel like I have made many mistakes in this past year, whether it is regarding my choice to switch from one career choice to another or about just smaller, everyday thing. I always make a mistake that I think about for a little much longer than necessary and I think I really need to stop because I don't like the feeling of being hung up on something. I need to learn to not take it to heart easily and take it in stride. KEEP MOVING FORWARD. "It sounds simple, but sometimes it's more difficult than you would think. When I fail I should keep moving forward and not dwell on the failure. When you dwell on your failures you aren't learn

Tech Tip: Canvas Gradebook

I honestly had no idea that OU even switched over to this new Canvas Gradebook. I guess I'm just that oblivious? I don't know. But as I read the instructions for the tech tip and applied to the gradebook, I did see how changing the display listing can be really useful. I personally like having things in assignment group order or alphabetical order. Sometimes professor just do it all over the place that it actually gets confusing. But I really like this tech tip! I wish I had known about this starting last semester when it actually first started.

Extra Credit Reading Notes: Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp

Image
Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp from Arabian Nights' Entertainment by Andrew Lang Aladdin is my one of my favorite Disney movies, so I was really excited to read this. I'm mad at myself for not being able to read it on time for the Part B reading earlier this week bu it's fine. I'm getting it done now. Aladdin finding the lamp. Source: Digital Trends . When I first start reading, I saw some similarities from the Disney version but I definitely saw a lot more differences as well.  Some big differences I noticed in this version of Aladdin compared to Disney's Aladdin: A magician who pretends to be Aladdin's uncle is the one who tricks him into going into the cave. In Disney's version, it is Jafar who tricks him.  This story of Aladdin has his mom playing a big role whereas in the movie, Aladdin doesn't have any parents. He's an orphan. THERE IS NO ABU IN THIS BOOK. The vizier wants the princess for his son, not for himself like

Week 6 StoryLab

Image
Storybook Research For last week's project, I was supposed to do an introduction for my Storybook project. However, I was totally lost about what I should write in my introduction. So for this week's Storylab, I decided to do some research to help me get started on that introduction. One book I found while looking up resources is Stories of the Ancient Greeks by Charles D. Shaw. The first chapter of the book is titled " The Gods of Greece ". As I was reading through this chapter, I realized that this would be really great in helping me with the introduction. I could use quite a few things from this chapter as inspiration. This chapter also served as an introduction to this book so that is also a bonus. I have somewhat of an idea on how I want to set the scene for the introduction. The author also introduces the gods in this chapter by using imagery. I am okay at using imagery and describing the setting or a character, so I got a good idea of how to improve th

Reading Notes: Arabian Nights, Part A

Image
Arabian Nights:  The Story of the Young King of the Black Isles from The Arabian Nights' Entertainments by Andrew Lang "Stories from the Arabian Nights". Source: Flickr .  For this week's reading, I decided to read the Arabian Nights unit. I have to be honest, it was mostly because I love Aladdin and I knew Aladdin came from the Arabian Nights stories.  One story that I really liked from Part A was The Story of the Young King of the Black Isles.  This story is about a king who finds out that his wife doesn't love him anymore and the events that occur after that. The King, who isn't named in the story, finds out one day while he is being fanned by two of her maids that she doesn't love him anymore. They say that she wants to kill him if she could because she is an enchantress. The king watches her and finds out its true when he badly wounds one of her favorite slaves. His wife begs him to build a palace in the garden. There she

Famous Last Words: Senioritis is a Pain

Image
Senioritis is a Pain We all know what it is. We've all been through it. Senioritis has definitely been hitting me hard lately. And it's only week 6 of this semester. I feel like I have so much to do that I just put it off thinking I'll do it later and then I run out of time. And that is the story of my life right there.  For the last few weeks of reading, I think I've only done Part A because I always run out of time to read the other part. This last week's reading I actually found really interesting because it was about Ancient Egypt. However, it took me a while to read Part B because I just wasn't that interested in those stories and so I missed that assignment. I hope I am able to read both parts for this week's reading.  I didn't really have any other writings last week except for the story in this class. I think I did a pretty good job on my story if I say so myself. However, looking back at it, there are things that I could have done d

Week 5 Story: Ra's Secret Desire

Image
Ra's Secret Desire Ra stood in the shadows, watching the people on the street. He was growing tired of living down here with the commoners. He was a god himself, yet he was to live his life here on Earth as a man. He desired power and importance. He wanted be as equally powerful as the great goddess Isis. Isis had the power of creation. Whatever she desires, she can create it. She created the Earth, the sky, and the underworld. He wanted to have the power that she has. There was one problem though. Isis gets her divine power from her secret name. The secret name that has never been revealed to any one, not man nor any god. Ra knew if he wanted the power, he would need to know that secret name. Each day Isis would walk with her fellow gods following her. She would take walks around her kingdom to see how her kingdom is doing. She would sit on her throne and utter decrees. Isis was growing old, and therefore growing more weak. Sometimes saliva would drip out of her mouth w

Reading Notes: Ancient Egypt, Part A

Image
The Secret Name of Ra from Egyptian Myth and Legend by Donald Mackenzie For this week's reading, I am doing the Ancient Egypt unit. I've always had an interest in Ancient Egypt since I was little. I used to watch The Mummy movies that starred Brendan Fraser. And then in middle school I learned about the discovery of King Tut's tomb so that caught my interest even more.  This one chapter of Part A I really liked because it's about Ra and Isis. In this chapter, the goddess Isis is feeling tired of mankind because she lives with them as a common woman. She wants to be among the powerful gods. She really wants to have power equal to Ra. She wants to know the secret name of Ra that gives him his powers. - Ra is the Ancient Egyptian god of the sun.  He was a strong ruler and divine father. He created many other deities such as Shu, the wind god, and Tefnet, the goddess of moisture and rain.  Ra had the ability to basically get what he wanted. If he thought

Storybook Plan

For my storybook project, I am going to focus mainly on the 12 Olympians. I want to do something like a reality show, like Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I want to show drama between family members and hushed conversations and stuff like that. I'm thinking for now it might be an anthology of stories. One possible story I want to include my own rendition of is from the Iliad. In What Thetis Did for Her Son , there is a section about Zeus and Hera and the other Olympians that I really liked and want to retell in my own way. Dialogues of the Gods . In this source, there are tons of funny dialogues that I would use for my own story because there's lot of melodrama as well and funny occurrences in this book by Lucian. I could use these as inspiration for my own dialogues I would use for interactions between the gods. I think I just want to make it a funny, reality show type of project. I don't know if I want there to be some kind of big message behind it. However, I do k

Week 4 Story- Marine: The Secret Woman

Image
Marine: The Secret Woman Marina being brought to the monastery by her father. Source: Wikimedia Commons . Marine watched as the other monks went about their day, doing various activities. Sometimes Marine wondered what it would be like to live in world outside of the monastery. But mostly, he wondered what it would be like to live his life as a woman. Because Marine in fact was a she, not a he.  A long time ago, Marine’s mother died and then her father entered a monastery and made Marine change her whole way of life. She was the only daughter but because they were to live in a monastery now, she had to pretend to be a boy. For 27 years, Marine kept up the charade. There were many, many days where she just wanted to scream out the truth, but for her father’s sake she kept quiet. One night Marine went into the woods to get some wood for the fire. She went too far away from the monastery and ended up staying in this man’s house with his family. Marine didn’t realize she wou

Wikipedia Trails: From Apollo to Langar

Image
From Apollo to Langar Apollo Belvedere. Source: Wikimedia Commons . I started off the Wikipedia trail with Apollo.  I was curious to learn more about Apollo because I was going to use him as one of the characters for my story this week and wanted to know more information about him. However, I ended up scrapping that story but still wanted to read more about him. Apollo is one of the most important and complex of the Olympian gods and goddesses in Greek and Roman mythology. He is the son of Zeus and Leto and has a twin named Artemis. He is associated with archery, music and dance. He is also associated with medicine and healing, however he can also bring ill-health and plague with his arrow. From the Apollo article, I went to the hecatomb article. A hecatomb was a sacrifice to the gods of 100 cattle. However, later on it came to mean the a large number of sacrifice of any kind of animal. They were offered to the Greek gods Hera, Athena, and Apollo during special religious ce

Reading Notes: Women Saints, Part A

Image
Saint Marine by F.S. Ellis (1900) For this week's reading, I read stories about Women Saints. The one that caught my interest the most was about Saint Marine. She was the only daughter. but mainly only child of this couple. After her mother died, her father entered into a monastery of religion and basically changed his daughter into a son. Meaning he made her change her way of life to make it seem as if she has always been a he. Marine ended up becoming a monk and living that way for 27 years. At 27, her father is dying and his last words to her were that it not be known to anyone else that she was a woman. One night Marine went to the woods to get wood for fire, and she stayed with some woman. The woman was pregnant by a knight but lied to her parents that it was the monk Marine. The parents went to the monastery to complain about Marine. Marine was eventually kicked out and waited at the gate for three years and lived off a morsel of bread everyday. When the child

Tech Tip: DuckDuckGo

Tech Tip: DuckDuckGo I checked out the search engine DuckDuckGo. I think it's a cool alternative to Google. It doesn't store your personal information and I think that's so nice. Google has access to a lot of your information because you can use Google to sign-in to so many websites now. And sometimes that information can be compromised so I think DuckDuckGo is a really cool alternative search engine.

Topic Research: Greek Mythology

Image
For the Storybook project, I decided to go to with Greek Mythology. I haven't decided yet what to title it. However, I know I want to center it mainly around the 12 Olympians. I think I'll have the lesser known gods and goddesses as well in it. I've found quite a bit of reading material I can use to help me build this storybook. Some of the ones that I found and really liked are these three. 1. Dialogues of the Gods by Lucian I really liked this source because it actually shows the gods and goddesses talking to each in just dialogues so I think I could use this as inspiration for my own dialogues I would use in my stories. 2. Greek Gods, Heroes, and Men  by Caroline H. and Samuel B. Harding I also really like this source because there are individual chapters for each god and goddess. Each chapter gives a lot of information about the god so it would be really useful in building a personality or background on the character. 3. Old Greek Stories by James Baldwin

Readings Notes: The Iliad, Part A

Image
Homer's Iliad.  Prose version- The Iliad by Alfred J, Church. For this week's reading, I picked Homer's Iliad. From the readings I did for Part A, I am focusing on three chapters that stood out to me. They are chapters 2- The Quarrel , 3- The Quarrel (cont.)  and 4- What Thetis Did for Her Son.  I'm honestly not sure why they stood out the most to me out of all of the other chapters. However, I did like the plot more of these three chapters compared to the others so I think that is probably why. In The Quarrel, Achilles and King Agamemnon are arguing about who gets what share of the spoils after conquering the city of Chryse. King Agamemnon originally wanted to take a girl name Chryseis who is the daughter of the priest of Apollo. When Apollo heard the priest prayers for help, he got angry that his priest had to go through such things and came down to Earth to start killing  people. Achilles at one point gets tired of seeing people die for nine days straight

Project Topic Brainstorm

Image
I'm excited to be able to create another Storybook or a Portfolio project for this class. When I started this class I was thinking it could probably be about some kind of Greek or Roman mythology. But after doing the Reading Overview in Week 2 and seeing all of the other reading options, I might make a project about something else besides Greek Mythology. Here are four of the possible topics I could base my project on. 1. Greek Mythology I've always been a fan of Greek mythology since high school. In high school, I read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series and that is when my interest for Greek mythology. As I was browsing through books, I noticed that are many different kinds of myths and legends that I hadn't heard of before. However, I think if I were to base my project around something certain, it would be about the gods and goddess of Olympus. I think it would be interesting to write a reality show kind of project on how the lives of these gods and goddess
