Extra Credit Reading: Hans Christian Andersen, Part A

Image
The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen translated by H.P. Paull The story starts with a prince who says he wants to marry a real princess. He goes around the world and meets so many princesses but he finds it hard to tell if they are the real deal or not. One stormy evening a princess comes knocking on their door. The wind and rain make her look really disheveled so they are skeptical about her being a real princess. The queen decides to test her. She goes and puts a pea under twenty mattresses and the princess was to sleep on those. The next morning they ask her how she slept and she says that she slept awfully because she felt something hard in her bed. That's how they knew that she was a real princess because only a real princess could be that sensitive. So the prince and princess end up getting married and the pea is put in a museum for all to see.  The Princess going to the top. Source: The Squirrel Basket .

The Twelve Huntsmen from Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes I thought this story was really interesting and fun to read.  The story starts off with a prince who is with his beloved maiden. One day he is called to his father's deathbed. The king says that you have to promise that you will marry whoever I name. So the prince agrees to it and afterwards he is crowned as the new king. Then after he was done mourning, he had to go marry the princess that the king wanted him to marry.  When the first maiden found out about, she gets scared and asks her dad to find her eleven other girls that look like her. When the girls were found, she made them all dress up as huntsmen including herself and then she went to her lover and asked him if he wanted huntsmen. The prince doesn't realize that it's his first girl but he still agrees to keep them all. The king had a lion that knew all the secrets. He told the king one day

Rapunzel from Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes I love the story of Rapunzel. From what I know of the original fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, they are not as happy or comedic as the Disney versions. So as I was reading, I knew there was going to be some things that I was going to be kind of shocked about. The Disney version of Rapunzel is called Tangled and so I was comparing and contrasting to that whilst reading this story. The biggest difference in the Brothers Grimm version and the Disney version is the Prince/Flynn Rider.  In the Brothers Grimm version, the guy who "saves" Rapunzel is the prince who hears singing often when he's in the forest. He sees the tower but doesn't know how to get up until he sees Gothel call out to Rapunzel to let down her hair. In the Disney version, the guy who "saves" her is Flynn Rider/Eugene, who is a thief. He actually steals Rapunzel's crown th

Learning Challenge: Schedule for this Week

Image
This is my second time around with a class like this. I took Indian Epics last fall and I didn't follow my schedule in that class either. I was hoping I would learn from my mistakes from that semester but I guess not haha. However, I did learn a little bit and right now, I'm not as far behind in this class as I was in that class.  I definitely have not been following my 6-hour schedule. I have done assignments all at random times but I'm just glad that I have been able to get most of them done during the week. I'm not ahead but I'm just a little behind.  My plan for this week is to do every core assignment and every extra credit assignment, plus maybe one or two from Week 15 and I will be done with this class.  I already wrote it down on my planner, but I'll write it here too. I usually always did the extra credit during the weekend but the last 2-3 I've been adding an extra credit assignment to a daily assignment so I won't have to rush to

Growth Mindset: Mottos and Mantras

Image created with Canva .  This is a saying that I think most everyone knows. It's from Finding Nemo. Dory the fish (who is voiced by Ellen Degeneres) says this. The meaning behind it is to "not give up." I feel like this is so simple and catchy but yet also kind of has a deeper meaning to it. I don't always say this but sometimes I catch myself thinking this when I want to give up on studying, writing a paper, etc.

Famous Last Words: Ready for Thanksgiving Break!

Wow, I can't believe this week is already over, and we only have a few more weeks of this semester left! I feel like I have been so swamped these last two weeks that I have really fallen behind in this class. However, after looking through what I have left to do and how many points I still need for an A, I think I'm not that behind. I enjoyed doing this week's readings! I read the English Tales unit and then the Russian Fairy Tales for extra credit reading. I wasn't able to write a story for this week because I just couldn't come up with anything. However, I did come up with an idea while going through my blog posts a while ago so I think I'll definitely be able to write a story for this week. This next week I'm going to be reading Dante's Inferno or one of the units about the Brothers Grimm fairytales. I'm not sure which one I want to read yet because I'm interested in both so I might end up reading of them for the extra credit. My best wr

Learning Challenge: Sleeping Schedules

The title of this article caught my attention. An Underappreciated Key to College Success: Sleep is something that I feel like so many college students can relate to. I think every college student knows how important sleep is for one's health. However, I know we've all gave up sleep to study or do homework. I know some friends that can easily pull all-nighters now because they got so used to doing it for certain classes. The author mentions in this article that college students who don't adopt healthy sleep habits are more likely to have a harder time trying to deal with the coarse load and are less likely to reach their academic potential. At the end of the article, there are a few tips that can help to assure that you get a good night's sleep. One thing that I have tried doing before is getting up at the same time everyday, including weekends. I feel like this is the hardest thing for me because I am just that person that values her sleep especially on the we

Week 13 Review

Image
Inspiration. Source: Sunday Class Announcements . J.K. Rowling is one of the favorite authors. She wrote the Harry Potter series which happens to be my favorite series of all time. I feel like this quote is very inspiring because she certainly followed through with what she says. The world of Harry Potter definitely transports the readers into a whole different, magical world.  I really liked watching this video. The message behind this video is that everyone has the power to create and that we can live a creative life if we choose to. One thing mentioned in this video is that it would take a combined amount of creativity to make a change in the world. I feel like this is true to some extent. I think an individual can make a difference or a change, but I also think that combining ideas can also help expand an individual's idea and make it in something better.

Wikipedia Trails: From Russia to Pythagoras

Image
I started the trail with the article about Russia . I did extra credit reading this week which was the Russian Fairy Tales. I thought these were so interesting to read so I wanted to know more about Russia. Moscow and St. Petersburg are also cities that are on my bucket list so I wanted to see if I could find other cool cities from the article that I might want to add to my bucket list. From there I went to the article about the Caspian Sea . I went to the this article because I had heard about this sea before but I wanted to see what else I could find out about it. One thing I learned from this article was that the Caspian Sea is variously classed as the "world's largest lake" or full-fledged sea. It is considered that because the Caspian Sea is landlocked, and doesn't have any outflows. The next article I went to is the one about the Persian Gulf . I was curious to see where this gulf was and what the countries around it are. I knew for sure that the United Arab

The Miser from Russian Fairy Tales  by W. R. S. Ralston This story is about a rich man, Marko, who is a cheapskate and a moujik who just wants Marko to pay him back. The story starts off with Marko the Rich walking by a beggar on the street. The beggar asks him for money but Marko just keeps on walking. He sees a poor moujik behind him give the beggar a copeck.  - moujik- a Russian peasant - copeck- a Russian money unit  Marko asks the moujik to give him a copeck to give to the beggar because he felt ashamed. He says "he didn't have any change" even though he's a rich man. The Moujik gives him one and asks when he should come to get the money. Marko says to come by the next day. When the Moujik goes back the next day, Marko tells him to come back the next day because "he really doesn't have change today." He comes back again the next day and Marko says the same thing and tells him to come again at the end of the fortnight. Whe

Mr. Miacca  from English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs I thought this story was so weird and funny at the same time. It starts off with this boy named Tommy, whose mother tells him to never go around the corner alone because Mr. Miacca will get him if he does. Tommy being the bad boy he is, doesn't listen to his mother and goes around the corner. Mr. Miacca catches him and takes him home. He tells Tommy that he's going to have him for supper. He remembers that he didn't get herbs so he calls his wife, Mrs. Miacca, to watch over Tommy while he goes and gets herbs. Tommy starts talking to Mrs. Miacca and asks her if Mr. Miacca always has little boys for dinner. She says "Yes, mostly if little boys are bad and get in his way." Tommy says "well doesn't he eat anything else like pudding?" and she says "I love pudding but she doesn't get it often." SO Tommy says that his mother makes pudding and that he can go and get it if she le

The Three Little Pigs from English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs The Three Little Pigs. Source: Greenville Symphony Orchestra .  The story of the three little pigs is one that we all know from way back in kindergarten, or even earlier. I realized that I only remember the children's version of the story. I don't remember ever reading about how the third little pig was tricked into going to all of these places by the wolf and in turn tricking the wolf.  The wolf and pig trick each other back and forth a few times. The first is when the wolf tells the pig that there is a field where he can find nice turnips. He tells the pig to be ready by 6 am and they can go together but the pig gets up at 5 and already gets the turnips before the wolf can show. This angers the wolf so he tries something else. The second is when the wolf tells the pig that there is a garden where he can find a nice apple tree. He tells the pig to be ready at 5 am this time but the pig get

Growth Mindset: Creativity

Image
A Growth Mindset Fuels Creativity in Youth In this article by Marilyn Price-Mitchell, she talks about five ways growth mindsets were fostered by supportive adults during adolescence. She believes that when children develop growth mindsets, they see themselves as creative works in progress. Growth Mindsets. Source: Roots of Action . The five growth mindsets she mentions in her article: I see connections. I am open to new ideas. I bow to my mistakes. I embrace diversity. I live in a human-virtual world. The ones that stuck out the most to me were #2 and #3. I think that I am fairly open to new ideas, but I know I have my hesitations when it comes to some things. I don't really like change unless I know I'm going to be comfortable with it from the beginning. However, I am trying to be more open to many things. Also, I always try to learn from my mistakes but I know I always don't.  I hope I can keep these growth mindsets in mind and they will help m

Week 12 Storylab

Image
For this storylab, I did more research for my storybook. I wanted to write stories about Zeus and his brothers, Hades and Poseidon. I needed to know more about them first so I could incorporate information into the story. First I did research on Hades and I found a biography about him, and two stories that also include Zeus and Hades interacting so I can possibly use some of that to build a story. Hades and the King of Corinth  (story where Zeus asks Hades for help) A Biography of the Greek God Hades  (biography) Greek Mythology: Hades and Persephone  (story where Hades ask Zeus for Persephone's hand in marriage) I also found some stuff for Poseidon as well. Zeus and Poseidon  (the relationship between the brothers) Poseidon  (biography) The Contest of Poseidon and Athena  As I was doing the research I got this idea to write a story where the brothers do a monthly meet-up and they all catch up on each other's life. The Gods have a rough relationship anyway be

The Adventure of Sir Percivale from King Arthur: Tales of the Round Table by Andrew Lang Percival. Source: Wikimedia Commons . Sir Percivale pursued adventures of his own and once when he was about to lose his life, he was saved from his enemies by Sir Galahad. He didn't realize it was Sir Galahad at first but then he eventually came to the realization. Sir Galahad had gone and followed the enemies into the forest to keep fighting while Sir Percivale waited by a tree. While he waited, a yeoman came by and asked if he had seen a knight on a black horse. The yeoman says the knight had taken his steed and if his lord finds out, he will be killed. Percivale says he will help find the knight. The yeoman gives Percivale his hackney so he doesn't have to go on foot. When he does find the knight, the knight in turn spears the hackney and so the hackney falls down and so does Percivale. Percivale tries to get the knight to fight him and the knight doesn't listen

Reading Notes: King Arthur, Part A

Image
For this week's readings, I am reading the King Arthur unit. I remember reading stories about King Arthur, Morgan le Fay, and Camelot back in elementary school through the Magic Tree House books and some other books I can't remember right now. King Arthur. Source: Wikimedia Commons . I found this story about King Arthur and Morgan le Fay so interesting because I remember her as being this nice, protector of Arthur. However, in this version of King Arthur, I read about how she hated him and wanted revenge from him. King Arthur killed a knight in battle one day and that knight just happened to be the one that Morgan loved.  One day Arthur had went out somewhere to rest after coming back from a battle. Morgan decided to go to where he was resting. When she reaches the Abbey of nuns where he is resting, she asks the nuns to not wake him. The nuns didn't want to disobey her so they left her alone.  When she goes inside to see Arthur, she sees that he has his swo

Learning Challenge: Deskercise

Image
In the article, Deskercise: 17 Exercises You Can Do At or Near Your Desk , I found some great little exercises that I really liked doing. While reading through the article, I realized I already do some of these regular. The first one on the list is fidget. I feel like I fidget all the time. For example, I tap my foot a lot, or I drum my fingernails. I also crack my knuckles often too. Something else I do from the list is arm stretches, and shoulder and neck stretches, and calf stretches. I feel like when I sit in a place for too long, my body gets stiff so I always stretch my arms, legs, or do some neck turning. One of the new ones I did was called the seated bicycle pedal. That one was a little weird to do at first but it did feel good after a while. Another exercise I found from this article is wrist stretches. I feel like I have done this before too but not exactly how the article said to do it. This one really helped loosen my fingers and it felt like the blood flow got bet
