Introduction to a Future Psychologist.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Shivani Patel. This is my second time taking a class with Laura Gibbs. I took the Indian Epics class last fall and I loved it so I am excited to take this Myth and Folklore class this semester. I am from Clinton, OK but I'm happy to say that my family left the small town life behind and moved to Oklahoma City this summer. So I guess I can officially say I'm from OKC now. I was born in India but moved here with my family to the United State when I was about five years old.

I am a 5th year senior Psychology major with a minor in Sociology. I'm graduating this December! (Whoop whoop!) If you had read my introduction post from last fall, it would say pre-PA as well, but sometimes you hit a bump in the road and your plan changes just like mine did. Now, I'm going for Psychology and currently in the process of applying to grad schools. My goal is to be a Clinical Psychologist so I know that's going to take a lot of work.

Being a Psychology major means I have a lot of reading to do for most of my classes. However, I've read a lot of interesting material over the last four years. One of the best classes I took last semester was a class called Juvenile Justice for my sociology minor. It was with one of my favorite sociology professors, Dr. Hill. I loved the class because of him. He's very passionate about what he teaches and he makes lectures fun, and the best part is that we watch at least 2-4 movies in his classes throughout the semester. So if you were ever thinking about taking a Sociology class, I recommend taking Criminology with Dr. Hill. That is easily one of my most favorite classes.

One of the many pictures that I have taken of the sky.

Hogwarts at Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Orlando, Florida. 2017

I love photography, and my favorite subject to capture is nature. If you look into my phone camera roll, you’ll see a lot of random pictures of the sky, flowers, or scenery, or places I have visited. I would like to one day have a photography business on the side. I got to visit Harry Potter World and Walt Disney World in 2017 and I got to take some of the most amazing pictures there. I also went to LA for Spring Break last semester and took some fun pictures there.

I'm a huge, HUGE, Harry Potter fan! I've read all of the books twice, almost three times. I've watched the movies countless times and I've also visited both Harry Potter Worlds in LA and Orlando. #Potterhead

I love to read! Bookstores are kind of my happy place. I am also an avid movies and TV shows watcher. I love the Marvel movies like The Avengers and Spider-Man. I did a whole Marvel movie marathon with my cousins before Endgame came out. Also, I’m always looking for a new show to watch on Netflix or Hulu or for a new book to read so feel free to leave me a recommendation!

  1. It is so fun to get to "meet" people a second time, Shivani! The first time, I'll be honest, it is just kind of overwhelming: so many people! And it takes me a while to get to know everybody. But now that I got to know you through your project and stories last time, it is fun to put that into a bigger picture of your life here. I had forgotten that you were actually born in India: that is so cool! And I know Dr. Hill from Twitter: he is such a nice guy. I am not surprised to hear that his classes are a great learning experience! And now in Myth-Folklore you have a whole world of stories to explore, and so many storytelling possibilities: stories-as-psychology, stories-with-Harry-Potter... as you learned already, anything your imagination can dream up will work.. and maybe illustrated with your own lovely photos. I am excited to see what catches your interest this semester! :-)

  2. Hi Shivani,

I'm in the same type of boat you're in, I'm applying to medical schools right now which I would assume is just as stressful as the process of applying to graduate school! All of the psych/socio classes that I've taken because I'm pre-med have all been highly interesting to me. Switching majors is just part of college – I have so many friends who have switched out of pre-PA/med/law into a completely different career path. Not one has regretted their decision to change (I even changed from a Chemistry to Biochemistry major).

Can’t wait to keep commenting throughout this semester!

  3. Hi Shivani!!! Congrats of graduating in December!!! I wish I was a lucky, but I still have a few years to go and grind. I am photography junkie kind of like you. My phone is full of random pictures of nature and cool little city fixtures. Marvel movies are a sold group of movies and I have yet to be disappointed by one that I have seen. I know there are a few out there that aren't the greatest but the majority are solid movies that I will watch for years to come.

  4. Hi Shivani!
That is so cool that you are taking another one of Professor Gibb's classes. I also think it is super unique and interesting whenever I learn that people were born outside of the united states. My mom is a psychologist so I know how difficult that subject manner can be. Congrats on being a senior and graduating in December! Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  5. Hi Shivani!
I am also from India, but I was not born there! My parents immigrated here before I was born. Currently, I am a Pre-PA major and hopefully everything goes smoothly. I also love the Marvel movies so much. I have watched their movies over and over again. Some great shows to watch on Netflix are Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away From Murder, Jane the Virgin, and Imposters! I hope one of these shows interests you!

  6. Hi Shivani! Congrats on becoming a city girl. :) I'm a social work major, so I totally feel your love for sociology classes and psychology and especially Juvenile Justice. I'm currently in my practicum at Oklahoma City Public Schools and seeing plenty that would be good topics of conversation for that class (school to prison pipeline, anyone?).

Your pics are so fun! I love Harry Potter too and HP world looks amazing. The books started coming out when I was in jr high but I never read them until I was an adult and then I binge read. How cool you got to go.

Glad to hear you had Prof Gibbs' other class and still came back for more, haha. I'm having a lot of fun with this one so far.

  7. Hi Shivani,

That's exciting your family has moved closer to the heart of a city! As well as them now being closer to you than before (I'm assuming, I'm not from Oklahoma so I'm not very familiar with the cities!). That's awesome you were able to take another one of Professor Gibbs' courses! I'm loving it so far and wish I could have the opportunity to take more in the future.

  8. Howdy Shivani,

I am also a fifth year psychology major, who is currently jumping through the hoops in order to apply to grad school. They really do not make applying easy, not in the slightest. There is a lot of reading associated with being a psych major, but they at least tend to be interesting. I am in a lab and I cannot tell you how much time I have spent just reading through research articles. Good luck with all of the readings they give you and good luck with grad school.

  9. Hey there Shivani! I am also a student who is taking a second class with Professor Gibbs, and so I guess that really proves how great these classes are! I'm glad you were able to switch over to something that may not have been your first plan, but will still be something you enjoy. My mother is a clinical psychologist, and I can tell you firsthand that it is one of the most rewarding jobs one could ever have. The work that psychologists do is so important in society, and I am happy to see the future of psychology in the hands of hardworking OU students. Good luck this semester!

  10. Hi Shivani! It’s nice to meet you. I am also from a small town in Oklahoma (Noble), so I am sure that moving to OKC was a big change. It’s really great that you have found something that you love to study. I visited Disney World and Harry Potter World Spring Break 2017, and it was one of my favorite trips ever. Good luck in your senior year!

  11. Hi Shivani!
First of all, I love your website title. Definitely makes me want to come back to see what other ways you'll incorporate fun into your website/posts! It's super cool that this is your second class with Dr. Gibbs, I bet not dealing with that initial learning curve must be nice! As for your majors, we all hit bumps in the road, but hopefully you've ended up somewhere you're happy and somewhere that's right for you! I'm also in the process of applying for grad schools so I feel you there. Best of luck!!

  12. Hi Shivani,

It is nice to meet you! How exciting to move to a big city after living in a small town. It is definitely a big change. That is really awesome that you were born in India. Do you get to go back and visit often? I love all your pictures of Disney. I used to live in Orlando, FL for four years and we had season passes to Disney. It was the best experience, I would have to say I am spoiled when it comes to theme parks since we lived 10 minutes from Disney growing up. I am looking forward to learning more about you through your writings! Have a great rest of the semester!

  13. Hello, Shivani! It’s nice to finally meet you! Thank you for your kind words on my comment wall, I really appreciate it. Congratulations on graduating this December, that must be so exciting! Reading and photography are so much fun, it sounds like we have a lot in common. Also, if you name some tv genres you like, I can give you a few recommendations. Anyhow, I hope that mythology and folklore continues to inspire you this semester!

  14. Hi Shivani,
This is such a great class so I can see why you would want to take it again. I feel like it is so difficult to make a hard decision like picking what you want to do for the rest of your life! I have changed my major so many times I can't even remember how many. I finally decided on Communications so I will be able to change my mind and still have a wide range of jobs to choose from. I am also graduating this semester. I is both exciting and scary! I hope you do well in grad school. I am also a huge HP fan but I sadly have not gotten the opportunity to go to Florida to see Hogwarts. That looks like so much fun!

  15. Hi Shivani!

It's cool that you're taking Laura's class again! I've enjoyed this too so far. I have taken a couple of sociology courses and had Dr. Hill for Juvenile Justice, he's so great! Psych sounds like a great major, best of luck on grad school and future career plans. It's really neat that you were born in India and grew up in Oklahoma. Hope your semester finishes well!

  16. Hi Shivani,
We have a lot in common (sort of)- I was planning on being a clinical psychologist an just switch to being Pre-OT. Although, lately I have been meeting a lot of Pre-PA's who are considering switching out of the program, I wonder why that is. Answering a question you asked on my Intro page: Yes, I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan, the series was what got me into reading!

  17. Hi Shivani,
I love Harry Potter, too! And I also love Percy Jackson, who it seems inspired your storybook. I loved reading that, and that's why I've come to your introduction from Dr. Gibbs' other class, Epics of India. Also, congratulations on all the hard work paying off so you can graduate! I love the graduation countdown on your blog. It's hilarious and also very real. Good luck in the future! Hopefully you can enjoy a break with your family.
