Reading Notes: Women Saints, Part A

by F.S. Ellis (1900)

For this week's reading, I read stories about Women Saints. The one that caught my interest the most was about Saint Marine.

She was the only daughter. but mainly only child of this couple. After her mother died, her father entered into a monastery of religion and basically changed his daughter into a son. Meaning he made her change her way of life to make it seem as if she has always been a he. Marine ended up becoming a monk and living that way for 27 years. At 27, her father is dying and his last words to her were that it not be known to anyone else that she was a woman.

One night Marine went to the woods to get wood for fire, and she stayed with some woman. The woman was pregnant by a knight but lied to her parents that it was the monk Marine. The parents went to the monastery to complain about Marine.

Marine was eventually kicked out and waited at the gate for three years and lived off a morsel of bread everyday.

When the child was old enough to not have to be breastfed, it was sent to Marine and Marine had to take care of him for another two years.

Marine died one day living a virtuous life and the woman who wrongly blamed her was basically given hell.

Overall, I think this is such an interesting story about a committed daughter and a virtuous woman was wronged. And how she still dealt with it and didn't complain about it.

I think if I were to write a story on this, I could switch her personality and make her the type of woman who does speak out about her being treated badly by others.
