Extra Credit Reading: British North America, Part B

from Myths and Legends of British North America by Katharine Barry Judson

I realized I really like the "creation" or "making" stories the most out of all of these stories. This one I read was about how lake and mountains were made.

The story is about how a woman made the lakes and mountains using hair oil, hair combings, whetstone and red ochre. Then she also got some wood.
The woman was kidnapped by bears so as she's escaping, one of the bears watches her and goes with her. She piles wood on him and escapes.

The ways she made the lakes and mountains:
  • Poured hair oil- which became a big lake
  • Threw down hair combings- became a mass of fallen trees
  • Broke off part of the whetstone and put it in the ground- it became a big mountain
  • Threw her whole comb and stuck it into the ground- became a big mass of mountains
  • She pours the rest of her hair oil and throws all of the hair combings- turned into a big lake with fallen trees all around
